From instrument to outcome
Follow one soil reading from Soil Probe 17 to an assessed and then challenged outcome, and see why the device, its observations, the claims built on them, and the judgements about those claims each keep their own identity or record.

Instrument to outcome
Evidence is a chain of distinct things
Cedar Valley, a fictional scenario: from a soil probe in North Field to a disputed outcome.

1 · The device
The probe keeps its identity through change
Recalibration and redeployment are events about the device, not new devices.
Rendering diagram…
A failed probe's replacement is a new device with a new RID. The old RID is retired, never reused.
2 · The observation
A reading is about a place, produced by a device
The observation names both by RID. It is neither of them.
Rendering diagram…
A signature proves the bytes are unchanged. The RID says which referent they concern.
3 · The claim
A claim cites evidence; it does not become it
Each assertion keeps its space, predicate, authority, and provenance.
The formation asserts withdrawals fell below the target.
Cites the dataset to describe a dry spring in North Field.
Who asserted it, under which authority, and when.
4 · Attestation and assessment
A signed assessment is one more assertion
An assessor stands behind a judgement. Others may still disagree.
A claim someone signs and is accountable for.
An independent assessor finds the evidence supports the report.
A remote assertion never overrides a registered record without governed reconciliation.
5 · Disagreement
Same outcome, different assertions
The county water office challenges the figure. All three point at one RID.
Rendering diagram…
A shared RID means the assertions concern one outcome — not that they agree.
The whole chain
Five links, none collapsed into another
Device, observation, evidence, claim, judgement — each with its own provenance.
Rendering diagram…
An outcome's RID is never evidence that it was achieved.
